A Columbián kidolgozott módszer szerint az alanyokkal egyenként két-három napig tartó, irányított kérdéseken alapuló mélyinterjúk készültek. Az interjúk magyar nyelvűek, egyesek angol nyelvű átirata megtalálható a gyűjteményben, csakúgy, mint az útmutató az interjúkhoz. A projektben kétfajta interjú készült. A kérdések a mindennapi életre, az életszínvonalra és a munkakörülményekre, az ideológiai indoktrinációra, valamint a társadalmi, kulturális és értékrendváltozásokra vonatkoztak. A projekt példa nélküli abban a tekintetben, hogy az 50-es években semmilyen más kutatás nem gyűjtött össze ennyi anyagot a szovjet blokkról. A gyűjtemény egyharmada az Egyesült Államokban felvett „A” típusú", hosszabb interjúkból áll, amelyek a válaszadókat szabadon beszéltetve a társadalmi hátterüket, attitűdjüket, az 1956-os forradalomban játszott szerepüket és véleményüket vizsgálták. A fennmaradó kétharmad a rövidebb, "B” típusú interjúkból áll, amelyek Európa főbb menekültközpontjaiban készültek Párizsban, Bécsben, Londonban, Rómában és Feldafingben (Münchentől délnyugatra).
