A gyűjtemény nagy részét az 1956 után a legkülönfélébb témákat, főként a kommunista országok belföldi és nemzetközi ügyeit és a kommunista mozgalom világszerte tapasztalható újabb irányzatait és fejleményeit értékelő angol nyelvű háttérjelentések, helyzetjelentések és sajtófigyelési összeállítások teszik ki. Az RFE kezdeti, a kelet-európai és a szovjet kapcsolatokról szóló elemzései New Yorkban készültek (1952-1956), mielőtt Münchenben bevezették volna a rendszeres angol nyelvű kutatási jelentések írását. A háttérjelentések egyfajta speciális kutatások voltak, amelyek bemutatták a kommunista világ aktuális eseményeit, illetve tendenciáit.
