A digitális gyűjtemény 70 292 darab, a Szabad Európa Rádió (RFE) Hír- és Információs Osztálya által 1951-1957 között több nyelven íródott, a vasfüggöny mögötti politikai, gazdasági, szociális és kulturális kérdésekkel – mint például a hatalmon lévő Kommunista Párt, az államapparátus szervezete, vagy a mindennapi élet mikro-szintű tevékenységei – foglalkozó dokumentumból áll. Az információs anyagokat az RFE müncheni irodájában állították össze az 1951-1956 között működő területi irodákból érkező forrás(ok) alapján: interjúk és beszélgetések feljegyzései, riportok, rádióműsor összefoglalók, beérkezett levelek, hivatalos dokumentumok nem hivatalos fordítása. Az gyűjtemény nagy része az emigránsokkal, turista vagy üzleti céllal nyugatra utazó személyekkel és disszidensekkel készült interjúk átiratából áll. Az információt átadó személyek névtelenek maradtak, a tanúvallomások hihetőségét pedig a csehszlovák, bolgár, magyar, lengyel és román értékelők ellenőrizték, bár ez nem mindig volt lehetséges. A kész anyagokat stencilgépen sokszorosítottak és 140-200 közötti példányszámban terjesztették. Habár a kapott információt angolul írták le, akad egy-két eredeti nyelven készült kivonat is.
